AIMIM Bycot Proceedings As Telangana Assembly Pasees Resolution Demanding Bharat Ratna for Narasimha

Telangana assembly on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution urging the central government to honour former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao with the Bharat Ratna.

The Opposition -- BJP and Congress - supported the move but the AIMIM, which is on friendly terms with the ruling Telugu Rashtra Samithi (TRS), decided to boycott the proceedings in the Telangana Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.

"Our party cannot support the resolution and discussion on the centenary celebrations of former PM Narasimha Rao," AIMIM said.

It was during PV Narasimha Rao's prime ministership that the Babri Masjid was demolished in Ayodhya in 1992. While the ruling TRS is Telangana is relentlessly pushing to confer the Bharat Ratna upon the former prime minister, the AIMIM is said to be unhappy with the move.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and PV Narasimha Rao's grandson NV Subhash welcomed the resolution and thanked the state government for fulling the "wish of millions of Telugu people". "We support Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for taking initiative as part of the centenary celebrations of the dynamic leader (Narasimha Rao) who was the son of Telangana and father of economic reforms in the country."

The BJP also hit out at the Congress and said the UPA government had rejected the assembly resolution that was passed during the united Andhra Pradesh seeking Bharat Ratna for PV Narasimha Rao.

"The Congress party's real intention was exposed and it should be a lesson for senior leaders in the party," NV Subhash said.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered PV Narasimha Rao on several occasions, praising his service to the nation. In the recent 'Maan ki Baat' programme, PM Modi called him a 'great son of India'," NV Subhash said.
