Tejasvi Surya Seeks to 'change Hyderabad', triggers Twitter storm

Tejasvi Surya Seeks to 'change Hyderabad', triggers Twitter storm
Bangalore South Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya triggered a Twitter storm on Monday during his visit to the city where he addressed a ‘Change Hyderabad’ campaign.

The BJP leader posted details about his meeting in the city by changing its name.

For a few hours in the afternoon, an unprintable word in Telugu trended as a hashtag added to Tejasvi Surya’s name. The Hindu is not printing the word whose implied meaning is go away. It quickly degenerated into a battle of IT cells with liberal use of expletives.

The MP was in the city to campaign for BJP candidates contesting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections.

A linguistic parallel had played out in Kerala during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s in 2016 with #PoMoneModi. While the phrase in Malayalam was a play on a movie dialogue, some non-Telugu users had to use urban dictionary to get the meaning of the Telugu cuss word.THindu

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has won the Jokihat constituency in Araria district and is decisively placed to win Amour in Purnea district and Kochadhaman in Kishanganj district.

The contest here was between AIMIM state president Akhtarul Iman, Congress strongman and six-time MLA Abdul Jalil Mastan and BJP turned JD(U) leader Saba Zafar.

Amour witnessed a great deal of acrimony during the campaign with Mastan even threatening to “break the hands and legs” of AIMIM national president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi. The election was also a battle for supremacy within the Surjapuri community to which both Akhtarul Iman and Abdul Jalil Mastan belong.Quint

Biden Administration Likely to Provide US Citizenship to Over 500,000 Indians
US President-elect Joe Biden will work towards providing a roadmap to American citizenship for nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants, including over 500,000 from India, and will also establish a minimum admission number of 95,000 refugees annually.

As a largely immigrant community, but in some cases with American roots reaching back generations, Indian-Americans know firsthand the strength and resilience that immigrants bring to the United States of America, according to a policy document issued by the Biden campaign.

He (Biden) will immediately begin working with Congress to pass legislative immigration reform that modernises our system, with a priority on keeping families together by providing a roadmap to citizenship for nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants -- including more than 500,000 from India," it said.

The Biden administration will support family-based immigration and preserve family unification as a core principle of the US' immigration system, which includes reducing the family visa backlog, it said.

"And, he will increase the number of refugees we welcome into this country by setting the annual global refugee admissions target to 125,000 and seek to raise it over time commensurate with our responsibility, our values, and the unprecedented global need. He will also work with Congress to establish a minimum admissions number of 95,000 refugees annually," the policy document said.TOI

Kamala Harris's Husband Doug Emhoff to Be First 'Second Gentleman'

Kamala Harris's Husband Doug Emhoff to Be First 'Second Gentleman'
When Kamala Harris makes history as the first woman and first Black U.S. Vice President, her husband Doug Emhoff will break his own new ground: as the original “second husband.”

Ms. Harris and Mr. Emhoff, who married in 2014 — she for the first time, he for the second — will also be the first mixed-race couple to occupy their positions. He is white while she is the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants. Both are 56.

The contours of Mr. Emhoff's new role as the nation's “second husband” — some prefer “second gentleman” — have yet to be determined; he has been vague about his plans so far.

Traditionally, the spouses of presidents and vice presidents have been expected to forge a careful balance of supportiveness and independence. Many pick a charitable cause to promote.

Mr. Emhoff, who was credited as a “secret weapon” on the campaign trail for his wife — even earning his own following on social media —is an accomplished lawyer specialising in media, sports and entertainment law.

He took leave in August from the multinational DLA Piper, which has lobbying offices in Washington. That could raise prickly conflicts of interest with Ms. Harris's work.AFP

Joe Biden Wins US Election After Four Tumultuous Years of Trump Presidency

Joe Biden Wins US Election After Four Tumultuous Years of Trump Presidency
Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States, achieving a decades-long political ambition and denying Donald Trump a second term after a deeply divisive presidency defined by a once-in-a-century pandemic, economic turmoil and social unrest.

Biden won the presidency by clinching Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes, after several days of painstaking vote counting following record turnout across the country. The win in Pennsylvania, which the Associated Press called at 11:25am EST on Saturday with 99% of the votes counted, took Biden’s electoral college vote to 284, surpassing the 270 needed to win the White House.

the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America,” Biden said in a statement after the result was called on Saturday, exactly 48 years after he was first elected to the US Senate.

“With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation. It’s time for America to unite and to heal.

In electing Biden, the American people have replaced a real estate developer and reality TV star who had no previous political experience with a veteran of Washington who has spent more than 50 years in public life and twice ran unsuccessfully for president. Trump is now the first incumbent to lose re-election since 1992, when Bill Clinton defeated George H W Bush.

The Income Tax department has conducted searches at five locations in Chennai and Madurai in the case of a Chennai-based group operating in the IT Infra sector and unearthed unaccounted cash of around ₹1,000 crore, according to a news release issued on Saturday.

The search conducted on 6 November led to the unearthing of evidence relating to investments in a Singapore registered firm, as per a statement issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

"The shareholding of this company is held by two companies, one owned by the group searched, while the other company is a subsidiary of a major infrastructure development and financing group. It has been found that the company belonging to the searched group has invested a nominal amount although it has 72 per cent shareholding, while the other company having 28 per cent shareholding has invested almost the entire money," the statement added.

The CBDT also said that this has resulted in a benefit of almost Singaporean dollars 7 crore, which is around ₹200 crore, in the hands of the firm belonging to the searched group, which was not disclosed by it in its return of income and also in the FA Schedule.

Thus, there is a suppression of foreign income received in the form of share subscription equivalent to ₹200 crore, which is taxable in India in the hands of the shareholder. Further, proceedings will be initiated under the Black Money Act, 2015 for not disclosing foreign assets/beneficial interest in the FA Schedule of the income tax return," the statement said.LM

France and Germany Thrust into Lockdown as Second Covid-19 Wave Sweeps Europe

France and Germany Thrust into Lockdown as Second Covid-19 Wave Sweeps Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel ordered their countries back into lockdown on Wednesday, as a massive second wave of coronavirus infections threatened to overwhelm Europe before the winter.
World stock markets went into a dive in response to the news that Europe's biggest economies were imposing nationwide restrictions almost as severe as the ones that drove the global economy this year into its deepest recession in generations.

The virus is circulating at a speed that not even the most pessimistic forecasts had anticipated," Macron said in a televised address. "Like all our neighbours, we are submerged by the sudden acceleration of the virus."

"We are all in the same position: overrun by a second wave which we know will be harder, more deadly than the first," he said. "I have decided that we need to return to the lockdown which stopped the virus

Under the new French measures which come into force on Friday, people will be required to stay in their homes except to buy essential goods, seek medical attention, or exercise for up to one hour a day. They will be permitted to go to work if their employer deems it impossible for them to do the job from home. Schools will stay open.

As in the darkest days of spring, anyone leaving their home in France will now have to carry a document justifying being outside, which can be checked by police

Germany will shut bars, restaurants and theatres from Nov. 2-30 under measures agreed between Merkel and heads of regional governments. Schools will stay open, and shops will be allowed to operate with strict limits on access.

"We need to take action now," Merkel said. "Our health system can still cope with this challenge today, but at this speed of infections it will reach the limits of its capacity within weeks."TOI

Canada at Risk of Another Lockdown as Coronavirus Cases Surge

Canada at Risk of Another Lockdown as Coronavirus Cases Surge
Canada’s two largest provinces have warned they may have to lock down parts of the economy again after a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Quebec, which has had more virus deaths than 40 US states, is an epicenter of the problem. The province has about 5,000 active cases, a 71% jump from the beginning of August, and is on the verge of closing bars and restaurants again in its two biggest cities, Montreal and Quebec City. Hospitalizations went up 26% in six days.

Ontario, the largest province with 14.7 million people, reported 700 new cases Monday, the most ever in a day, though it’s also testing far more people than it was in spring. A group of hospitals called on Premier Doug Ford’s government to revert to stricter “stage two” measures in Toronto and Ottawa, which would mean restricting or closing indoor businesses such as gyms, movie theaters and restaurants.

It’s up to each of us. Together our collective actions will decide if we face a wave or a tsunami,” Ford said Monday at a news conference during which he pleaded for residents to follow rules and get the flu vaccine -- but did not move the province back to stage two.

It’s a reversal of fortune for a country that avoided the summertime spike that hit the US As the pandemic got worse in Sun Belt states, a largely compliant Canadian population hunkered down and wore masks.

Provincial governments, which set the rules for most companies, allowed the vast majority of businesses to open up again, sometimes with capacity limits and new sanitation rules. In Toronto, the financial capital, many restrictions were lifted on July 31.

As Labor Day neared, virus cases started to rise again. They flared in British Columbia, praised for its early handling of the crisis. Nationally, active cases have more than doubled since Sept. 1, to 12,759. Almost 95% are in the four largest provinces, with the greatest problems in big cities.CNN

US Election Results 2020 LIVE Updates: Trump, Biden supporters stage protests across US; vote tally trickles in

US Election Results 2020 LIVE Updates: Trump, Biden supporters stage protests across US; vote tally trickles in

A second day of sometimes dueling demonstrations over the integrity of the U.S. presidential election started early on Thursday in Philadelphia and other cities as ballot counting dragged on in a handful of states that will decide the outcome.

Supporters of Joe Biden have rallied around the slogan to "count every vote," believing a complete tally would show the Democratic former vice president had beaten Republican President Donald Trump. Some ardent Trump backers have countered with cries to "protect the vote" in support of his campaign's efforts to have some categories of ballots, including some votes submitted by mail, discarded. Both factions appeared outside a vote-counting center in Philadelphia on Thursday morning, where election staff steadily worked through a mountain of still-uncounted mail-in ballots that will determine whether Biden or Trump will take Pennsylvania's crucial 20 Electoral College votes.

829 Teachers, 575 Students Test Covid +ve After Schools Reopen in Andhra Pradesh

829 Teachers, 575 Students Test Covid +ve After Schools Reopen in Andhra Pradesh
The reopening of government schools in Andhra Pradesh from Monday has triggered a panic wave among both teachers and students, with the surfacing of Covid-19 cases in several places across the state

In the first phase, the government has thrown open schools for Classes 9 and 10 on alternate days, but only for half-a-day. According to official figures, 98.84% of the schools were opened with 87.78% of teachers turning up to take the classes.

However, the attendance of students was not up to the expectations. Only 39.62% of students of Class 9 and 43.65% of students of Class 10 attended school in the first three days.

What caused worry for the teachers and students is the surfacing of Covid-19 cases among teachers and students, when the health department officials conducted tests on them soon after the opening of classes, as per the instructions of the government.
Similarly, tests were conducted on 95,763 students of Class 9 and 10, out of 3,92,000 students who attended the classes in the last three days. Out of them, 575 students tested positive.

“This is not a very alarming number and most of them are asymptomatic. They were immediately sent to quarantine as per the health protocol and their condition is being monitored regularly,” School Education Commissioner V Chinna Veerabhadrudu told Hindustan Times.

He said the highest number of cases surfaced in West Godavari district, where 262 out of 41,000 teachers tested positive. In Visakhapatnam, 4,527 teachers underwent testing and out of them 52 tested positive on Wednesday, he said.HT

Trump Challenges Counts as Biden Inches Closer to Victory

Trump Challenges Counts as Biden Inches Closer to Victory
Tension spiralled in the still undecided U.S. election after President Donald Trump made unprecedented claims of fraud and demanded a recount in Wisconsin, where Democrat Joe Biden notched up another win to inch closer to overall victory.

While there was no official winner more than 12 hours after the last polls closed on Tuesday, the fate of the most divisive contest in decades was coming down to just a handful of states where the Republican incumbent and his challenger fought over razor-thin margins.

In the latest blow to Mr. Trump, Mr. Biden, 77, was declared the winner of Wisconsin, with an unsurmountable lead of 20,000 after 98% of ballots had been counted.

This mirrored Mr. Biden's slow but steady march across the remaining toss-up states in the vast country, where counting was complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic and record numbers of early and mailed-in votes.

Mr. Biden led in Michigan by nearly 45,000 votes with 94% counted and has already been declared winner of another tight race in Arizona. Results were still being tabulated in Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania — all of them close contests.

The apparent shift in fortunes toward the Democrat prompted Trump, 74, to launch a tirade claiming mass fraud that he claimed on Twitter had made his victories “magically disappear.”AFP

COVID-19 Vaccine to be Available in India by January if. says Serum Institute CEO Poonawalla
A safe and effective vaccine against novel coronavirus may be available in India by January 2021, says Adar Poonawalla, chief executive officer (CEO), Serum Institute of India. Pune based drugmaker joined hands with British-Swedish pharma major AstraZeneca to produce the coronavirus vaccine for low-and-middle income countries, developed by University of Oxford. Dubbed as Covishield, the vaccine is currently in the Phase II/III clinical trial in the country. "Based on the success of the trials in India and the United Kingdom, and if approvals from regulatory bodies are in place in time, then we can expect the vaccine to be available in India by January 2021, only if its proven immunogenic and efficacious, Poonawalla said in an interview with Mint.

The current data pertaining to the trials show that there are no immediate concerns pertaining to Covishield," Poonawalla added. "So far, thousands of people have had it in India and abroad with no safety concerns," he further explained. However it will take two to three years to ascertain the long-term effects of the vaccine, he said. LM

Saudi Arabia Prepares for Third Phase of Umrah Pilgrimage

Saudi Arabia Prepares for Third Phase of Umrah Pilgrimage

Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Mohammed Saleh Benten said that the Kingdom welcomes all Muslims coming from abroad to perform the Umrah as authorities kick off the third phase of the resumption of the pilgrimage amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Saudi Arabia has been gradually allowing Umrah pilgrims to resume the rituals, introducing a three-phase plan that adheres to health protocols to ensure their safety throughout their holy journey.

The Kingdom has allowed citizens and residents to start performing Umrah as of Oct.4 at 30 percent capacity, or 6,000 pilgrims a day. It will open for Muslims from abroad starting Nov. 1. The second phase kicked off on Sunday. No virus cases have been reported among the pilgrims.

Benten said that opening the Umrah to foreigners will be the world’s largest event amid the pandemic.
He added that a mobile phone app, “Eatmarna”, will be dedicated to the pilgrims coming from abroad. Each arrival will be tested for the coronavirus and then they will be transported in batches to the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Makkah. They will have separate lanes to follow and dedicated locations where they will perform the rituals.

Companies that fly in the Umrah pilgrims from their own countries will be held responsible for ensuring that they implement all health precautions, said Benten.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is coordinating its efforts with the Health Ministry in implementing the third phase of the Umrah.

England to Enter New Lockdow UK Virus Cases Pass 1 Million

England to Enter New Lockdow UK Virus Cases Pass 1 Million
Unless we act, we could see deaths in this country running at several thousand a day,” said Johnson, who was hospitalized earlier this year for a serious case of COVID-19.

Under the new restrictions, bars and restaurants can only offer take-out, non-essential shops must close and people will only be able to leave home for a short list of reasons including exercise. Activities ranging from haircuts to foreign holidays must once again be put on hold.

Unlike during the U.K.’s first three-month lockdown earlier this year, schools, universities, construction sites and manufacturing businesses will stay open.

As in other European countries, virus cases in the U.K. began to climb after lockdown measures were eased in the summer and people began to return to workplaces, schools, universities and social life. The Office for National Statistics estimated Friday that 1 in 100 people in England, well over half a million, had the virus in the week to Oct. 23.

Johnson had hoped a set of regional restrictions introduced earlier in October would be enough to push numbers down. But government scientific advisers predict that on the outbreak’s current trajectory, demand for hospital beds will exceed capacity by the first week of December, even if temporary hospitals set up during the first peak of the virus are reopened.

The scientists warned COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths could soon surpass the levels seen at the outbreak’s spring peak, when daily deaths topped 1,000. The government’s chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, said the mortality rate had “potential to be twice as bad, if not more” than it was during the pandemic’s first European wave, if nothing was done.

As European countries such as France, Germany and Belgium in imposing a second lockdown amid surging caseloads, it looked inevitable that Johnson would have to follow.

Official figures announced Saturday recorded 21,915 new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours, bringing Britain’s total since the start of the pandemic to 1,011,660. Britain’s death toll from the coronavirus is 46,555, the highest in Europe, with 326 new deaths announced Saturday.

The United States, India, Brazil, Russia, France, Spain, Argentina and Colombia have also recorded more than 1 million cases, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Scientists say the true number of cases is much higher because not everyone with the virus is tested.

Any new lockdown will need Parliament’s approval, and a vote is scheduled for Wednesday. The new restrictions would apply to England. Other parts of the U.K. set their own public health measures, with Wales and Northern Ireland already effectively in lockdown and Scotland under a set of tough regional restrictions.AP
