Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in erstwhile Warangal district, including Warangal city, Hanamkonda and Kazipet, that flooded several low-lying areas on Saturday. Hundreds of people have been evacuated and shifted to relief centres in Warangal city as well as in Narsampet town.
While Nallabelli mandal in Warangal Rural district recorded 27.02 cm rainfall, highest in the State, it was followed by Shayampet mandal in Warangal Rural with 23.50 cm and Atmakur with 21.34 cm. Meanwhile, Hanamkonada and Hasanparthy mandals, which mainly fall under the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) limits, received 21.22 cm and 21.08 cm thus inundating several low-lying areas.
Government Chief Whip Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar along with Mayor Gunda Prakash Rao and Warangal Urban Collector Rajiv Gandhi visited flood-affected Ambedkar Nagar, Kakatiya Colony, Sammaiah Nagar and other localities in the city. Nearly 250 people of Vaddera Colony and Sammaiah Nagar have been shifted to relief centres.
The GWMC has set up a toll free number to receive complaints from the city dwellers regarding floods. People can call at 1800 425 1980, 9100908402, 9701999688 and 9701999659 and send messages through WhatsApp to 7997100300.
Meanwhile, Rangaya Cheruvu at Govindapur village in Nallabelli mandal is overflowing six feet above the weirs. Narsampet MLA Peddi Sudharshan Reddy visited the tank and directed the officials to take steps to strengthen the bund with 300 sand bags by pressing 50 labourers, tractors and earth movers. On the other hand, 30 families from NTR Colony in Narsampet town have been shifted to a relief centre. Electric poles and trees were uprooted and roads were also damaged at several places in the erstwhile Warangal district.
